A year-round winter wonderland, the Jungfraujoch is the highest point you can visit in Europe. Located 3,454 meters (11,333 feet) above sea level and situated between the Mönch and Jungfrau peaks, this UNESCO World Heritage Site offers panoramic views of the snow-capped Alps and glaciers. On a perfectly clear day, the view extends all the way to France, Germany, and Italy.

There are three different observation points. In my opinion, the Sphinx Observatory is by far the best. Not only is it the highest and the only one with a 360-degree view of the mountains and glaciers, but the deck has a non-slip metal grate. While the other two observation points are closer to their respective peaks (and when I say close, I mean if they were any closer you’d be climbing the mountain), they are covered in compact snow and ice and are very slippery. There are ropes you can hold on to, but even with that, it’s not uncommon for people to fall.
A series of well-marked tunnels carved into the mountain connects tourists to the different exhibits. In one section, the rock tunnels turn to ice and the walls are lined with a series of intricate ice sculptures. The visitor center features a cafe along with shops for the two things Switzerland does best: chocolate and watches.

Know Before You Go:
- The train leaves from Kleine Schiedegg and lasts 40 minutes. The majority of the train ride is through a tunnel; if you’re claustrophobic this might not be the best activity for you.
- The Jungfraujoch is cold year-round, and the temperature rarely rises above freezing. For the best experience, wear a heavy jacket, scarf, hat, and gloves. Since part of the tour involves walking on snow and ice, the more traction your shoes have, the better.
- Although it’s not a major concern, at over 11,300 feet there is less oxygen and occasionally people do feel altitude sickness after they reach the top. If you have a prior health condition, consult with your doctor before going. There is a first aid station; however, many people opt to take the next train down.
- If you have a Jungfrau Travel Pass, the round-trip ticket is heavily discounted. You can leave from Interlaken, Lauterbrunnen, Wengen, or Grindlewald, and the price is the same regardless. For updated pricing information check the official website here.
The Jungfraujoch is a beautiful and well-put together experience. If it’s in your budget and the weather cameras look clear, I highly recommend exploring the “Top of Europe.”
